Solid brass vs plated — why it matters

The single most important thing to check before buying any brass sconce is whether it is solid brass or brass-plated. Solid brass is real brass all the way through, so it can be polished back to a shine for decades or left to develop a warm, living patina — it never wears through to a different metal underneath. Plated fixtures are a micron-thin brass-colored coating over cheaper steel or zinc; that coating flakes, scratches and corrodes within a few years, and once it is gone there is nothing to restore. How high to hang a wall sconce

Flanking a bed, aim for roughly the height of the headboard plus a few inches, positioned so the switch or shade is easy to reach while seated. In a hallway or up a staircase, repeat sconces every 8–10 feet for a rhythm of soft pools of light.
